Follow these steps before you apply for grad studies. Admissions to graduate programs are highly competitive, as there are a limited number of spaces. There is no general right of admission, so it's best to be as prepared as possible. UCalgary has over 60 programs and degrees.
Find the right one for you. Explore programs. If you are thinking of working with an agentplease note that only applications made through the official UCalgary web application will be considered for admission. If successful, an offer will be sent directly to you from the university and made available in the Student Centre.
The university does not release admission information to third parties, including agents. Prospective students with funding from the China Scholarship Council, see additional information. If you are a doctoral student at another institution, you can obtain a PhD jointly awarded by your home university and the University of Calgary.
Before applying, make sure that both programs of interest offer the same degree e. For application details, see Interdisciplinary Degree Regulations. You can upload unofficial documents to your online application. Contact your referees and ask if they would provide a letter in support of your application. How to find good references.
A study proposal provides a clear description of the research or study area that you would like to pursue. How to write a study proposal. Some graduate programs require a writing sample.
A sample must be something you have written yourself, independently in an undergraduate or graduate class. Check your program requirements to know which tests you will need to take and the minimum score required to be considered for admission. The time to schedule and successfully complete these tests varies, and so you will need to plan accordingly. If your original documents are not in English, you must request a second set of documents to be given to a translator for a notarized word-for-word English translation.
Send the translated copy to your graduate program in addition to your official documents. After you submit your online application, you will receive an email with your UCID number and instructions on how to access your Student Centre, where you will find a to-do list for providing program-specific supporting documents.
How to view your application status. You are an international student if you do not hold Permanent Residency or Citizenship in Canada. For all incoming international students, please indicate that you will be on a study permit.

The university invites applications for admission from international applicants for fall and winter sessions. The University of Calgary offers admission to International students only during Fall and Winter intakes. Some of the graduate programs might require a higher score in the English Proficiency tests. International students who have been accepted by the University of Calgary and need to stay in Canada for more than 6 months are required to obtain a study permit to study in Canada and a temporary resident visa.
UCalgary also offers various certification courses. The basic admission criteria for all the undergraduate programs are the same. The admission criteria and requirements for most of the degree programs remain the same. At the University of Calgary, the admission decision is usually declared within weeks after the application submission.

We do not recommend sending your transcripts ahead of submitting your online applications. Transcripts are tracked using this online system, and may be routed to the appropriate department based on your open application.
Sending transcripts ahead of the online applications may result in misplaced documents. If original documents are not in English : Original documents or certified true copies of your official transcripts and degree certificates in the original language sent directly from the issuing institution in the original signed, sealed envelopes to the SEDV program office.
As well as, an English translation from the issuing university or a notarized word-for-word English translation of a duplicate copy of that original.
Supplying your complete academic history is your responsibility. We will not review an incomplete application nor extend the submission deadline to accommodate the omitted education.
If at any time it is discovered that a student was admitted on the basis of falsified documents or information, the admission will immediately be declared null and void and future admission will be denied. We require one academic and one professional reference direct reports to supervisor and or manager for a complete application.
If you have been absent from studies for five years or more, two professional references will suffice; however only under these circumstances. Once you submit your online application, your referees will receive an email notification inviting them to submit their letters of support.

Official documents indicating test scores should be sent to the SEDV program office hard copy only or emailed to gradapps ucalgary. Each question is allocated a maximum of words to provide your response.
If the maximum word count for each question is used, your total letter will be no more than words. Only the first words of each answer will be read, nor will we consider any additional sections outside of these questions. The four questions you must address are:. This professionally formatted document will outline your employment history, skills and education experience; please save as a PDF and upload this document to your application.

To be considered official, transcripts must be issued directly from the issuing institution ex. For many countries, results of examinations conducted by national examining boards must be sent straight from the board rather than your high school.
From certain countries, we will allow you to bring your original high school transcript to our office, where a photocopy will be made and considered official. Only transcripts in sealed school envelopes with the stamp of the institution on the seal are considered official.
If the envelope is blank and there is no school logo or stamp, or if the seal has been broken before arriving in our office, we cannot confirm where the transcript was sent from.
Please ask your school to stamp the envelope before mailing. Official English translations are made by a Certified Translator. If your school will not provide English translations, have the documents sent to the U of C in the original language only. Then, have a copy of the documents to be translated brought to a Certified Translator. Translations must be submitted with a copy of the original language document. You cannot translate your own documents. Detailed course outlines are normally required for post-secondary courses not completed in Canada.
Outlines must be verified stamped by school authorities and sent directly to UCQ in a sealed school envelope with the stamp of the institution over the seal. Outlines sent by the student are not acceptable. Outlines are not normally required for high school courses.
If you have your own copy of your transcripts, start by mailing a photocopy or faxing them to the Student Services Office. We require you to make every effort to obtain official transcripts ex: email, fax, phone, mail. If you are still unsuccessful, contact Student Services as soon as possible.
You will be asked to follow a detailed procedure in attempt to obtain your transcripts. This procedure may take months, so do not wait until the last minute.
Please be aware of document deadlines when attempting to obtain transcripts. You must submit a transcript for every high school and post-secondary school you ever attended. If you stopped attending before completing any courses ex: moved, withdrew, etc.
